    We cannot express how important it is for community members to get engaged in the Prioritization & Rebaselining. Below is a recap of this process, how you can get involved, presentation materials used at each meeting and also contact information.

    BACKGROUND:

    The city is making decisions regarding which streets it will spend the $540 million raised through T-Splost and the Renew Atlanta Grant. 

    The city council has received its report. RDA complete streets has already been fully funded through the Flats at Westview, Cascade Road Phase 2 (B.E. Mays to RDA) is listed as design only, Langhorn Street is not funded, Beecher complete repaving has been funded, the Westview Cemetery/West Lake Trail is listed as design only and the Lionel Hampton connection to the Beltline will be left unfunded. There will be plenty to advocate around and encourage you to attend each of the Round 2 meetings.

    T-SPLOST BACKGROUND:

    The Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST programs, launched in 2015 and 2016, were created to help address more than $1 billion in infrastructure backlog facing the City. Though the programs have made much progress to date delivering key projects across Atlanta, we face significant challenges as we move forward to complete the full initial program scope. Moreover, the cost to deliver the full scope of the initial program considerably exceeds the funding available from the Renew Atlanta Bond and anticipated TSPLOST revenues.

    Thus, we are working diligently to prioritize and re-baseline the initial program lists to deliver the greatest impact to Atlanta’s above-ground infrastructure and transportation network with the available funds. Through this re-baselining effort, we are dedicated to engaging all stakeholders to help inform the process in a transparent and meaningful way.

    We met with local neighbor, Steven Dollar from Dollar Income Tax, to help us breakdown some of the changes which came from the 2018 Tax Reform Bill. Below are some of the highlights to share:

    1. How did the standard deduction and exemptions change under the new law?

    With the passing of tax reform, the standard deduction available for each filing status significantly increased to up to $24,000 for married couples, $12,000 for single, and $18,000 for head of household. The personal exemption was eliminated, but the good news is that to offset that loss, the child tax credit doubled to $2,000 along with a new other dependent credit of $500.

    Under the old rules the exemption acted like a deduction, reducing filers’ taxable income for each person claimed. But the credit, which takes its place, will cut filers’ tax bill dollar for dollar.

     

    2. Is it now better or worse for me to claim the standard vs itemized deductions?

    If you’re among the many taxpayers who are concerned that not itemizing deductions in 2018 means you’re at a disadvantage – you can relax. For many, it’s actually the opposite.

    An increase in the standard deduction doesn’t mean you lose the tax benefit of the deductions you itemized in the past. You simply get the deduction without needing to show proof of the deductible expense – or even have it at all. That means you actually reap more tax benefit by using the standard deduction than you would have by itemizing.

     

    3. Can I still itemize if I have lots of deductions?

    Yes! If your itemized deductions total to more than the new standard deduction, you can and should still claim your deductible expenses on your tax return. It’s important to calculate the difference to see which is higher.  And in some cases, it’s beneficial to itemize even if it’s lower than the standard deduction because it will help you on your state return. We explore all options for each individual to help you the most!

    Help Clean Up Vines In Westview


    In January we featured an article on the impact of English Ivy and our trees -- English Ivy suffocates the trees and with the right wind this will cause our tress to fall over. 


    Westview Vine Crew wants to get out there and clean up the vines starting at the Community Garden lot (1439 S. Gordon) and then they will make their way toward Willard Ave. in the alley between S. Gordon St. and Stokes Ave. The Westview Vine Crew will be demonstrating various techniques. Please join the fun!


    WHAT TO WEAR: 

    We encourage you to wear boots / tough work shoes, thick jeans / pants, and work gloves. 

    WHAT TO BRING: 

    If you have, please bring your chainsaw, hatchet, loppers, machetes, battery powered reciprocating saws (sawzalls), or any other tools you can use to cut these vines!

    BACKGROUND ON TSPLOST SURVEY:

    The Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST programs, launched in 2015 and 2016, were created to address the $1B+ infrastructure backlog facing the city. TSPLOST is currently facing the challenge to deliver on all projects as the cost to deliver the full scope of the initial program considerably exceeds the funding available from the Renew Atlanta Bond and TSPLOST revenues.

    WCO representative attending the TSPLOST initial meeting at Grady High, and was presented with 3 scenarios. Each scenario had different funding allocated to different projects. There was a breakout session to further discuss the scenarios. Each group came to a consensus on which scenario they preferred (a tally was taken) and in that scenario each person were to come up with their top 3 projects, and also 2 wish list projects.

    IMPACTS TO WESTVIEW:

    On the list of projects were Cascade Ave Phase 2 (Complete Streets), RDA (Complete Streets) and Cascade Ave TCC (Transportation Connection Corridor).

    • RDA is currently listed as "fully funded" meaning regardless of what scenario they go with ultimately, RDA will still be completed.
    • Cascade Ave Phase 2 was listed as "Design Only". It was shared that projects listed as design only were NOT guaranteed to be completed and would ONLY be completed through their current design stage (so if it is in conceptual design - that's where it will end) until additional funding is secured.

    Our representative, Louis Ali, did raise the concern regarding the recent fatalities within Westview. Both were within less than 1 month's time frame and urged the session leaders to reconsider their priorities.
